    1. I spent 24 years teaching second grade. One day in my 24th year, we had a teacher's inservice on an active shooter in the building. We listened to the phone calls made by Columbine students before they were killed, listened to law enforcement tell us what we should and should not do in such a situation and went thru some very realistic scenerios. I went home that day drained and upset. I told my husband that day that I was retiring at the end of the school year. I loved being a teacher but I would not come to school each day armed with a concealed weapon as some teachers were going to do or to learn how to murder to protect my students. I would protect them with my last breath but I knew I could not teach with that in the back of my mind all the time. I told my principal my decision the next day and the reasons why. She understood.
